Blonde(r) and havin' more fun

Why do I let myself go so long between highlights? I love the way I feel walking out of the salon - somehow lighter, bouncier, more confident - and each time I vow to not let three months whiz by before I return.

And yet.

Life goes on. I write, I workout, I've got family gatherings and girls' nights out and tours and interviews and before I know it, my sunshine-colored strands have faded to earthy brown. My face, framed by my natural roots, looks pale and dull. Zits pop out from nowhere; the circles under my eyes go full-moon.

But once my stylist Molly works her magic, painting on the violet-colored cream and wrapping my locks up in foil, I am like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon of dull hair. I am (blonde) woman, hear me roar!

Now, before this turns into a blog version of that admittedly fabulous Hairapy commercial that plots blondes against brunettes, know this: It is not my intent to say blonde is better than brunette or redhead for that matter. My parents have brown hair. Some of my best friends are brunette...really! And it was a spicy redhead who introduced me to thong underwear and Fresca, for which I will forever be grateful. I simply like the way I look and feel with goldilocks.

How 'bout you? What's your favorite hue and why? Ever do anything super fun and crazy, like pink streaks?

I'm a natural brunette, but discovered when I was 18 how much better my complexion and overall appearance is when I'm blonde. Not bleach blond, more like Jennifer Anniston blonde. However, being a student, and appreciating the finer salons, I too am only able to refresh my roots every three months or so, without breaking the bank. I just got my hair done yesterday, and as much as I love my hair colorist, I have a little story. I've been seeing her for six years now, a loyal customer I am. She always tries to find a way where I will blow dry my own hair. I love the way she colors my hair, so I let it go, and she usually drops ten dollars off the very hefty price. However, yesterday she just kind of set me up with a blow dryer and didn't even ask, nevermind give me money off the price. So I did something that I am terribly embarrassed about, I left a 12% tip. I feel badly, and I am terrified that it will effect my relationship with her, but what else was I to do?? What is hair salon etiquette here???

I am a natural blond however I hate my color if my roots begin to show I see a greenish gold color compared to the lovely coper reds. I dye my blonde every six weeks just to hide my natural green ish gold. I love red I am in love with red. This all started when I got my first red high lights at the age of 13, but I am going to try to slowly highlight my red with blond untill I go back to the natural gold was born with and there is nothing wrong with prefering adifferent color half of hollywood is Not blond they color just like we do but have the cash to highlight evey week if they choose. Which just means they over kill their hair and we can keep our tender locks looking lovely.

I used to hate the fact that I have deep black hair.(It's almost marroon!)I always wanted straight, shimmering gold locks but I was FAR from it.So when I was a young teenager, I bought really strong dye and gave myself horrible orange-brassy highlights!! It had a kind of "messed-up-tiger" effect! I lived with that look for a few months, convincing myself that I liked the lighter look. After a while I just gave up on trying to go blond and resorted to and dyeing my hair back to its original inky black shade. I remember seeing how much better and healthier my hair looked afterward, but most of all, I was me again. Now I consider my black hair one of my best features...I like to think that it makes me different. There's nothing better than accepting what you already have and knowing that it's beautiful.

I have blond hair, but I think dark hair is beautiful. I would love hair like Courteney Cox, but it doesn't look right with my skin tone.

I am totally with you on the highlights thing! The first time I ever got them three people commented that I looked "really good" that day and I was hooked. I prefer some blond and strawberry to perk up my mousy brown hair.
