Alli - friend or foe?
Unless you live under a rock, you've heard of alli (TM), the prettily rainbow-hued, newly FDA-approved OTC weight loss product. It started making itself known in ads a few months ago, appearing as some sort of book (at least that's how I took it.) Turns out, there is a book - I know because I spotted a whole bunch of 'em while grocery shopping last night - which you need to take the PILL - Orlistat ( a fat-blocker). You toss these babies back three times a day with meals containing fat. So, all meals. Alli (pronounced "al-eye" as in, "I'm your ally, I can help you get thin, I'm on your side." Clever) works by blocking about 25 percent of the fat an individual takes in.
But beware! This is not a license to drive through Mickey Ds and chomp down on cheeseburgers to your heart's content. You must maintain a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet with about 15 grams of fat per meal (drink a Grande Caramel Frappuccino with whipped cream and you're in trouble.) What kind of trouble, you ask? Oh, wait, check this out from the official web site:
"The active ingredient in alli attaches to some of the natural enzymes in the digestive system, preventing them from breaking down about a quarter of the fat you eat. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful. In fact, you may recognize it in the toilet as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza."
:-(
I flipped through a brochure and while it sound impressive to hear a fat-blocker will help you lose 50% more weight that diet and exercise alone, what it boils down to is a 15-lb weight loss with the drug versus a 10-lb weight loss with your own hard work. And clean undies to boot.
I don't know, I think part of me is over-reacting. Of course it's good to get people on the right track toward becoming healthy and losing weight if they need to. I just think that with this plan, since you already have to maintain an exemplary diet and exercise regimen in addition to the drug, why not just stick to A and B instead of adding gassy, oily C on top? What are your thoughts? Has anyone tried alli?
BTW I am not a doctor (though I play Dr. McDreamy's love interest on a special TV show in my mind). For more information, see a medical review at The Diet Channel.

I 100% agree. its sad that people get suckered into believing they need this product. like you said if you are maintaing a low fat diet with exercise anyway you will see the results without this product.
I think this is just another gimmick. As long as there are people who believe that taking a few pills a day will make them thinner, there will be a market for products like these. Saying it's FDA approved doesn't hurt the sales, I'm sure. But we all know that eating a sensible, low-fat diet and exercise does work. It's just that it doesn't work fast enough. So we think adding a pill will speed it up. I'm sorry, but I don't wanna have to check my poop to make sure it's working. And besides, don't we have too many pills in our lives anyway? Vitamins, fatty acids, aspirins, not to mention any medication. I just wanna eat fruits and veggies and go for a walk, without fear of soiling my underpants, or that cute skort Leslie recommends.
I read your blog about Orlistat (Alli). I took that stuff. It
was impossible to eat a diet so low in fat. I constantly had problems, many in embarrassing places.
This drug is a pain and definitaly not a good idea for anyone. If your diet
is so low in fat, so as not to have "problems", you probably don't need the
stuff to begin with. To the contrary, you probably exist on straw and
sawdust and have issues the other way.
i've heard it being talked about all over the place and agree - its yet another weight loss gimmick for people that have lost hope about losing weight... i have never taken a diet pill and never will - too many side effects and what happens when you stop taking them? i don't want to be dependent on a pill for the rest of my life... i do just fine w/weight watchers and running... :o)

I am not sure there is any miracle fix for weight loss, except the old fashioned way, maintaining a healthy lifestyle along with exercise. I need to lose some weight, but I don't think I would ever buy into any of those quick fixes. Bottom line, it's hard work, there are no short cuts. Don't trust those who tell you that there is a short cut. I supposed I am biased because I don't believe in pills or anything that alters the body's natural state. As I;ve said before, the weight lost industry is one of the very few places that make a profit off other people insecurities. Nice topic because I saw it advertised on one of those websites for women and I thought, how dare they promote these pills as if they know of the side effects, etc.
Try taking it one time daily...with your only fatty meal. You may not have a problem any more. You may not need it at all meals. I haven't had any gas or loose stools. The instructions said up to three times daily. If you lose one pound weekly, its fifty pounds in a year. what would you weigh by your birthday...
They specifically state that it's NOT a quick fix, and thus the side effects will occour if you don't follow the dosing directions. For some of us who take great pains to eat a reduced fat & calorie diet AND exercise and still have a hard time of it, this only helps to enhance our efforts. 15 grams of fat per meal is PLENTY also. It's just watching your portion sizes and eating right. You could actually eat lots and well and be under 15g. I think that for some, this is a right choice, and that for others they may not need it. I don't view it as I would say...dexatrim, or trimspa.
I wasted 60 bucks. Not worth it. If you're eating right and exercise this doesn't work like it states. And I take meds that cause constipation so I haven't lost 1 stinkin pound since I've been on it 2 weeks. I might as well take a laxative and lose weight!
who wants an oily discharge to accompany the diet(deprivation) you're on? :0 not me i'll stick to busting my own butt workin out~thank u!
Alli does not work. Period. Don't waste your money. After 20 days I'm 4 lbs heavier and $60 poorer. I had no bad side effects because I eat a healthy low-fat, low-calorie diet already - my weight loss was stuck in a plateau, and I thought this would help. It did not.
I began taking Alli 5 weeks ago and I've had decent results so far. I think people flip out too much for the treatment effects because frankly, it isn't that bad. I take two pills daily - one with lunch and one with dinner. I don't take any with breakfast ( which is a bowl of Raisin Bran and soymilk). I am 24 years old, 5'4" and now 139 lbs. I'm nowhere near fat but definitely not a slim gal and I could afford to lose a few pounds. Prior to taking Alli, I was regularly running 20-25 miles a week, eating a healthy diet, but not losing any weight. Perhaps I had reached a plateau in my diet & exercise. However, since taking Alli, I've lost 4 lbs without changing my diet and contuing my regular weekly mileage. Keep in mind, the pill only works IF you take it properly and actually make efforts to exercise. For me, it just helped me get over that plateau. I'm excited and look forward to seeing my results in the coming months.
I have been using alli for a month and a half. Only had problems with side effects twice. Prior to this, I had tried low carb diets, and always failed.
Now, I eat healthy food - no more bacon for lunch - and take the pills. I have lost 13 pounds.
I have always tried to run 3 time per week. I am 42 - 5'5 and now 144. I weigh now what I did when I became pregnant with my 3rd child. I am able to wear my wedding ring for the 1st time since then. So far, so good. The thing I miss the most is huge steaks.
very dangerous
I took it the right way and was in the hospital
I rushed to the local Walgreens the first day that Alli came out for the first FDA approved pill for losing weight. FDA approval in it self ensures the product is safe. It also means a company can't add wild claims on the packaging such as all other weight loss pills (read the fine print).
I used Alli for exactly 30 days (I still have 18 pills left, they are not needed for EVERY meal). I seemed to eat more throughout the day then I had before and I found myself eating healthier. My beginning weight was 210lb and at the end of the month with Alli, I weighed 180ld. 30lbs gone. I then took a vacation overseas without the pill and came back as 180lb. I am very pleased at what this product has done for me. 3 months later and I weigh 179lbs. This weight does not come back when you stop. I eat out 3-4/week, but now choose the healthier options thanks to Alli.
The side effects are not bad, or uncontrollable, they only show the pill is working and you do not have to run to the BR as others believe.

I've found this pill to be just the help that I've always needed. For some reason, even though it does not contain an appetite suppressant, it has had that effect on me - accept for druing my period. In two weeks, my clothes are looser and I am very happly.
You can pu pu it all you want...but if it helps give someone hope....then let them have it. If you have a lot of weight to lose....50% more is a lot. So, if you work your butt off...and 45 pounds....you would have only been down 30....in a long road to weight loss, that is several weeks work. Also, it probably makes you think twice before eating too much fatty stuff...which would save you there. As long as it won't hurt you, don't dog it....give people some hope.
