Insult of the day

A random teenage boy on the street told me I have cankles today.

1. Consider the source.
2. Remember that what goes around comes around. People who put negative things into the world will get it back in some form or another.

Have a better day today!

Cankles? That's silly. Mischa Barton has cankles- still gorgeous! Your doing good if cankles are your biggest problem!

"This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun, and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence towards the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown, or to any man or number of men; go freely with the powerful uneducated persons, and with the young, and mothers, of families: read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life: re-examine all you have been told at school or church, or in any books, and dismiss whatever insults your soul."

Mischa is also a drug and alcohol user, not to mention her terrible sense of style and no sense for acting. Yea, let's praise her. Let's worship her. She's so great!
KindAndThoughful, that's wonderful advice. Love your posts! "...dismiss whatever insults your soul or strong, muscular legs!"

Maybe I'm just behind the times, but what are cankles? I'm confused. I guess that'd just make it easier not to be insulted, but really, the consider the source comment is the truth-teenagers are generally not ready to be part of society at large, but they grow out of it.

Cankle-where you calf muscle blends with your ankle, making it non-existent.
Also, genetic and there's no exercise to make it go away. If you have cankles, you probably have larger calves and a helluva time finding boots you can zip up. (except the tall, hoochie, latex boots, which are not office appropriate)
Shoes or sandals with straps that go around your ankle only make your legs look chunkier. Flats only accentuate this annoying affliction. Boots and thick heels recommended. (Per What Not To Wear girls)

I WAS wearing flats!! Too funny. And I never, ever wear flats, but it was a flip-flop day, walking around Michigan Ave. all day. But you all are right, CONSIDER THE SOURCE. I guess what was going through my mind is this: Is THIS what society has come to - 13-year-old boys are so crazily body-conscious that (a) they know what cankles are and (b) they actually use it in insulting random women? It seems so inane to me that I'm actually laughing out loud as I type right now. This is a kid that probably would have a difficult time telling me what day we celebrate the Fourth of July on and he knows what CANKLES are...something many educated, adult women don't know about? The Muffin Top insanity continues!!!!

Hey Leslie! Yes - consider the source!! I have always wondered what makes young boys - or anyone - feel that they have the right to make comments about other peoples' bodies. I had a similar experience when I was walking down the street with my sister-in-law - a teenager looked at both of us and goes "you hot" (to my SIL) and then looked at me (with disgust) and goes "You NOT hot."

Yeah - I knew he was probably 15, but I was still hurt :( Words sting sometimes.

Ugh. First of all, everyone, I know Bridget and she is, in fact, hot (so is her website - check it out at www.heractivelife.com). Second I think your psycho teenager may be my psycho teenager. I want to find him and kick him in the nuts.

You are way too sweet, Leslie ;) I think we should compare notes on the said teenager! I have a feeling that there is a line of women who would like to take shots at teenage boys who say stupid things.

Mia- "Mischa is also a drug and alcohol user, not to mention her terrible sense of style and no sense for acting. Yea, let's praise her. Let's worship her. She's so great!"

I said nothing of her being "great" or "worshiping" her. In fact I don't really know much about her- but I was using a celebrity as an example of how a woman who had "cankles" (the only one I could think of at the time) and was still very attractive. If you don't like her, fine! But what does drug/alcohol use have to do with anything? Please don't use hurtful sarcasm on a website that that is meant to be positive and uplifting.

Posted by Alison on June 14 at 11:06am

I was being sarcastic, yes. Sorry if that offends you. I do not look at celebrities to make myself feel better, esp someone who's not even good at being one! When in the spotlight, everything a person does is magnified so I think people should try and do good things and realize it comes with a responsibility. It is my opinion that we should have more positive female role models and heroes to look up to, women like Leslie and Bridget. I know we can't even go grocery shopping without seeing the gossip mags, but I really try to avoid it because I think it doesn't help women. I only feel worse about myself after I read or even glance through a beauty magazine. That's why I like this site, because it's not about celebrities. It's about honest women and real issues and I really like Leslie!

I do agree with you, about needing "real role models", which is also why I enjoy this site. I don't at all think that celebrities are good role models- but they are a universally known (for the grocery mag. reason), which is why I chose to use one in the first place as an example. I understand why you don't want celebrity talk on this website. It can be really annoying and damaging to real self esteem. Personally, I think "cankles" is a silly a term as "fat" SHOULD be (but unfortunately isn't). I also think that most celebrities are silly (or really really stupid )- Which is why I don't get bothered by them- but a lot of other people don't think that way. Which I totally understand. no more celeb talk :)

I think Humor Harry and his distant cousin Sarcasm Sam are a great couple of positive and uplifting fellas. But just like all fellas, sometimes they need a time out and we just wanna have some girl time without them. And if we want to be crabby and whiney or just plain mad, it's okay! We're women, we'll get over it in a few minutes.
BTW, I hope Period Patty comes to visit. She's making me nervous! Hope she didn't lose the directions I sent with my invitation.
