Poll: How do you handle atrocious airport eating?

Having spent approximately three weeks total at airports in 2007, I've seen my fair share of nutritional abominations (cinnamon-glazed fat bombs; pork-fried rice; eight-cheese pizza). This past weekend, I was thrilled to find ONE healthy option at the Detroit airport (actually, my guy surprised me with it) - some sort of bean and veggie-filled tortilla roll-up from Max & Erma's, dipped in pico de gallo. It got me wondering:

When in an airport, do you:

  • Grab something quick at Sbarro, McDonalds, Manchu Wok, etc.
  • Try to fill up on healthy, albeit overpriced, goodies like fresh fruit, yogurt, sushi.
  • Bring something from home.
  • Pray for snack mix on the plane.

PS for those of us weary travellers looking for a healthy pick-me-up, share your favorite airport treat. I'll go first: I almost always get two Fruit & Yogurt Parfaits from McDonalds (low-fat, calcium boost, plus berries).

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I suppose. Maybe chase it with some pomegranate juice?

Hmmm... my "treat" from the airport is to buy a couple of trashy fashion mags (Cosmo, Marie Claire etc.) to keep me entertained. I pretty much bring all my food from home in my carry-on. Although now you HAVE to buy water at those overpriced kiosks... at least it's cold:)

I'm impressed with all the people that bring stuff from home. I've never thought about doing that.

I have always traveled with my three kids, and hubby, each had thier own little back pack, filled with craisins, sliced carrots, celery and trail mix. For a sweet snack I would add an apple with some fat free caramel in individual packs. My kids and hubby always loved it. Also some string cheese, and wheat crackers went over wonderful. Each had thier own juice too. Lots we can do to stay away from high priced airport junk food! Good Luck.
