50 and topless!

No, that's not the tentative title for my in-my-dreams forthcoming memoir.

Remember when Jamie Lee Curtis posed in a sportsbra and bicycle shorts, sans makeup or airbrushing, for More Magazine? OMG, that was so amazing. Courageous, I say, because she stepped out from the uber-perfect frame used to highlight celebrities - and extremely empowering, to boot.

Once again, JLC is taking it off to show age has nothing to do with gorgeousity. She's on the cover of this month's AARP The Magazine to celebrate her 50th birthday. (Who knew 50 was "retirement age"?) And girl is topless.

Now, you can't actually see anything, nudity-wise. But with her natural salt-and-pepper hair and toned shoulders, she's driving home a point. In the magazine, she says, "I want to be older. I actually think there's an incredible amount of self-knowledge that comes with getting older. I feel way better now than I did when I was 20. I'm stronger, I'm smarter in every way, I'm so much less crazy than I was then."

*love*

I was reading about how, a few years ago, some tabloid published a pic of her and listed her weight as 161 pounds. J. Lee Curtis was like, "How dare you! I'm not 161 pounds!" And she went home, hopped on a scale...and it read 161 pounds. Not that that's an abnormal weight for a tall woman or anything but she decided to shape up a bit and started eating healthier foods and working out (she does yoga and plays tennis three times a week) - over the next year, she dropped about 20 pounds in a healthy way."

Could a celebrity Calendar Girls be far behind? Picture it, in 20 years: Jamie Lee, Goldie Hawn, Angela Bassett, Glenn Close, Ellen Barkin...who else?

What do you think of Jamie Lee posing topless for AARP?

  • It's cool. I admire her pro-age approach and positive self-image.
  • I don't need to see her topless to appreciate her message.

That's wonderful! I love Jamie Lee Curtis, she's fantastic.

I LOVE her! I saw an interview with her a couple of years ago, and the interviewer said "You look great!" and she said "I look like what I look like."
She rocks!

I find her attractive. A few years ago i recall some rumor about her that her genetic makeup was of a male, and not a female. There's some scientific stuff out there that says some women, mostly bodybuilder women, have the genetic makeup of males and that thats what helps them to get so muscular.

(please to note that this is all from memory. L.? am I totally wrong?)
I love jamie lee curtis.
her writing? her acting? ALL OF IT.

my beef? that she is coming out (and has before) saying "this is me! like it or lump it. I am a woman!! Look my bod--it's real and I love it."

now, that's all well and good but this braindeadmama is 99% sure that JLC HAD plastic surgery in the past.

the LOOK AT MY BOD is followed up with IM NOT HAVING AND *MORE* SURGERY.

which is fab. and such a role model thing to even STOP in hollywood....but it was *after she had some* which kind of depresses this woman.
can we not just age and, well, AGE.

toddler is yanking me off my soapbox....

(yeah that was supposed to be ANY more...not AND)

Culturally we are obsessed with youth and it is rare to see the media addressing sexuality and age. She is looking sexy with her short graying hair and shapely shoulders.

I think this is great!

ooh - Sela Ward...great one!

Israel, I have heard the same rumors about her genetic makeup and I guess all we can say is "Who knows, who cares?" These rumors fly left and right about celebs.

And re. MizFit's comment about surgery, I do believe she's correct - Curtis has spoken about having some lipo and Botox. But I think that was in the past, as in before she became a role model for healthy beauty at any age. So I suppose the question is, does it matter to us if she did that a few years ago, so long as we can appreciate her current message? I think I can get over it.

JLC is and always will be beautiful. There are 20 year olds I don't necessarily want to see scantily clad, but JLC will always be able to pull it off.

I have to sort of take issue with the "genetic makeup of males" thing. I deeply, strenuously object to the idea that if a woman is strong and athletic and healthy, we need to find a "reason why" because it's, evidently, just not "normal". Gah. I understand that it's about muscle mass, and I'm not shooting the messengar, Israel, just...gah. She's strong, she's a woman, and it's great. That's all I need to know!

JLC is a strong, admirable woman and I love her message. I never came close to loving myself as much in my 20s as I do in my mid-30s, and I hope to keep improving. That doesn't have a lot to do with how I look...but everything to do with how I feel about my life, the physical and emotional strength and wisdom and mental clarity I have gained...and I think that's sort of JLC's point, too. "I look how I look", wrinkles, stretch marks and all. But man, look at how I feel! :-)

V, its just interesting because she has such a masculine look to her. whereas not all strong women do.

Posted by Cassie on March 24 at 03:58pm

huh.

I never thought of her as looking masculine.

LOL...DH says, "When I was a 13-year-old boy and she was in Halloween...I sure didn't think she looked masculine!" I had to laugh at that one, a LOT.

I do understand...she doesn't have the curves she once did, and maybe athleticism has something to do with that. But she was once known for looking pretty darned feminine! DH also brought up the magazine cover where she posed next to the "Danger: Curves Ahead" sign...and then he said, "If more guys looked like Jamie Lee Curtis, I'd probably be gay."

Just thought I'd give the masculine perspective on the topic...and hopefully at least someone is getting as much of a giggle from it as I am. His memories of JLC are evidently pretty darned good! :-)

I think the point she's making is that she became famous at 19, and for a long time was known more for her body than for her work. That's bound to give anyone a complex, lol! She has come to terms with her issues and overcome a lot of insecurities (and has even overcome alcoholism), and I really love that she is so vocal and open about it.

That is so freakin' awesome! As someone who turned 48 last week and is sitting here at my desk trying to talk myself out of throwing up my lunch - on purpose - I wish I could be more like her!

I love Jamie Lee Curtis. She's such a strong woman and I think it's so cool that she's such a positive role model for body image. There aren't a lot of women her age who are so outspoken about the subject, and I think it's really invaluable for the younger crowd (as well as empowering to women her age!).
