Chunky monkey

I'm sorry but this just makes me sad and disturbed and all kinds of depressed. I'll be blogging about it soon at Huffington Post and will update this with a link. In the meantime, Please Don't Feed The Monkeys.

When I see these poor, fat Japanese monkeys, I can't help but

  • Feel angry —how could the zoo let this happen?
  • Not be surprised—obesity in humans is skyrocketing...why not apes?
  • Yawn—there are bigger fish to fry

My first thought was, who cares? cause they are monkeys so i think of it more as a nature thing- storing fat for times if famine.

But then i wondered why its different for monkeys and people. being fat is a huge issue for humans, even though it presents the same health issues as monkeys. and then it dawned on me that monkeys dont have self esteem and dont get ridiculed-atleast not in a language they can understand. there is no stigma for a fat monkey. so they will simply be put on a diet that is healthy for them and drop the weight. it SHOULD be that easy for people, but obviously it isnt.

I have NO idea how to calculate WW points for a monkey though ;)

That is SO sad. We can't seem to take care of ourselves, animals, hell even the environment these days. These monkeys are yet another reflection of our serious disregard for looking after ourselves and others.

Really, really sad. Weren't the monkeys being monitored? The obviously didn't become obese overnight, what the heck were the zoo people doing all this time? The monkeys don't know they're not supposed to eat stuff given to them! Ugh! animal abuse!

My thoughts pretty much followed Kelly T's arc. If we are the most genetically similar to apes then what does this mean for us?

So many thoughts are running through my head like:
Poor monkeys. Bad Zoo. That is just WRONG! I'm glad we have clothes to cover up our dangley bits.

Sadly, I don't feel that I'm as affected by it as I should be, probably because we see obesity so much in humans that it doesn't look that surprising in a monkey.

P.S. - I LOVE the new design! :-)

Is it bad that I kind of think this picture is fake? Then again looking closely at it, I'm not sure how it would be faked.

But you know, women sometimes say- I didn't really realize I was getting so big until...

So looks like that's what's happening with this guy, except when someone is monitoring your diet for you, shouldn't they be a little more observant to changes before they get this bad?

That could be considered animal abuse. Obesity is a human problem; let's not start turning it into an issue for animals too!

I used to work at a zoo, and although I can't say what regulations are like in other countries, in the US, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums has guidelines, and people feeding the animals would have been stopped long before it got to this point. However, I remember feeding animals in zoos when I was a kid, so maybe their regulations just haven't caught up. Either way, it's disgusting & it makes me angry (both at the zoo & the people doing the feeding).

poor monkeys....at least humans generally understand (and consent to) diets - the animals, not so much. ask me about our overweight bears, sometime...

Aww, I feel bad for the monkeys. I don't really understand why the zoo has a system set up where people can feed them. I'm pretty sure most of the food we eat isn't good for us, so it's not gonna be good for a monkey, either.
