3rd Rock..and 60 pounds...from the Sun

Y'all know Kristen Johnson? The 6-foot-tall (go on, girl!) actress from 3rd Rock from the Sun? (And who can forget her infamous portrayal of Ivana Humpalot in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me?) Well, I obviously know her and keep up on her whereabouts because we both belong to a special society of tall women...which is why I was so shocked to see a pic of her in People Magazine looking alarmingly thin. She always seemed so voluptous and curvy to me. Check it out:

Before:
kristenjohnstonbefore.jpg

And after:
kirstenjohnstonafter.jpg

Johnston says that, pre-weight loss, she was "miserable" as a result of an admittedly crappy diet - her post-filming meals would include numerous drinks, "plus a diet of pizza, BLTs and fries, dinner at 11 p.m.”

In December of 2006, she suffered from a burst ulcer (ouch) and spent manyl weeks in the hospital. That event forced her to take “a hard look at her life.” She dropped the alcohol and added vegetables, oatmeal, and salads with salmon (a lineup which sounds shockingly like what I eat, except I gobble down enough candy to give my dentist an anxiety attack.)

“I think it looks great. I feel amazing,” she says in People. “I no longer stress about my body. I’m in a happy place.”

BUT...she also acknowledges that the anorexia rumors came fast and furious: "When actresses lose weight, people can think they are anorexic. It is important to me to say that is not the case here.”

She dropped 60 pounds. I think she looks quite thin but I don't want to jump to any conclusions or judge her...after all, this was motivated by a medical issue. My gut says she did this in a healthy way and does not have an eating disorder. Over at The Daily Blabber, comments are ranging from "She looks like total crap...WAY too skinny! She used to look great" to "I think she looks great and if she feels great then good for her."

Whaddyouthink?

I'm sorry, but I saw the photo of her in People. It really screamed eating disorder to me. I hope she's healthy. I love her.

Posted by Greta/Does This Blog Make Us Look Fat? on June 23 at 12:02pm

I wonder ... it SOUNDS like she's done it the healthy way but that kind of weightloss speaks to me of a slight obsessive nature. She may be eating good food but exercising obsessively.

I'm a little bit with Dana on this - regular people don't slim down that much that quickly.

Posted by Gemfit on June 23 at 12:13pm

If she was hospitalized, that may explain some of the weight loss. I also hope she's healthy, because she's awesome!

The really sad thing is that now she'll probably have tons of offers of work coming in just because she's so skinny.

Posted by Alyssa on June 23 at 12:20pm

yea, I'm not sure about this one. She might have been unhealthy with her eating habits before and not at her ideal weight...but I NEVER saw her as someone that needed to lose 60lbs! That is A LOT of weight lost and a little more that just 'getting healthy' from what she was before.

Posted by Fitarella on June 23 at 12:22pm

ok, I admit, I am kinda changing my tune. I looked at the After photo and she does seem awfully thin. Maybe she got started out on a good note but then once she began losing weight and the inevitable comments came pouring in, she got carried away...I just hate to call "anorexia" on anyone, sick or not.

Posted by leslie on June 23 at 12:38pm

I don't know if it's anorexia, but it does look like she might have taken the weight loss a bit too far. Or maybe she's still having some health/digestion issues?

Posted by Jen on June 23 at 12:44pm

I definitely think she looks too thin.. but part of me thinks she has a larger frame and thus looks better with a little more weight. I also feel like I'm an authority.. being a tall girl. She could have been 200lbs and now 140lbs, which is definitely on the low end of a healthy weight for height, but is still healthy.

She does look pretty scary-skinny and maybe just went a little too far.

Posted by Emily on June 23 at 01:12pm

Yikes! Reminds me of the Olsen Twins...I won't jump to conclusions. :)

Posted by Mark Salinas on June 23 at 01:14pm

I, too, think it's a frame thing not a numbers thing.
her bones look too big for the weight she's carrying in my opinion.
she no longer looks filled with vitality and life and STRENGTH.

(catherine zeta jones? WTF there as well!)

If she looks that way and really eats healthily then fine, but the fact that she was beautiful before makes me sad that she thought she should go that far with her weight loss. I'm on the fence because I think we all know how horrible restaurant food can be for you and sometimes just cooking at home can make a tremendous difference in our weight - 60 pounds of difference? I'm not so sure about that one.

Posted by Colleen on June 23 at 01:35pm

I don't follow her career obsessively, but I've always enjoyed Kristen Johnson just because I thought she looked normal. And I'm looking at the before shot thinking, "My God, she has beautiful arms and legs. Toned and muscular without looking Madonna ripped and sinewy." I can kinda sorta understand if she wanted to trim her midsection a little, though not that I have room to talk. But the after shot? Is it just me or can anyone else see her hip bones jutting out? Scary.

Posted by Monique on June 23 at 02:17pm

PS-- I also agree with Alyssa. We'll probably be seeing a lot more of Ms Johnson now that she's lost all this weight and the Hollywood minds start thinking, "Now she has a terric body to match her incredible acting ability."

Ugh.

Posted by Monique on June 23 at 02:19pm

wow, I am jumping in the judging wagon and going to say it is suspicious. I thought she looked great before...but now she looks like she might blow away.

Posted by workout mommy on June 23 at 02:19pm

I dont feel the need to say HOW she did it, but she does look too thin to me. She was beautiful before. She looks like there is something wrong, regardless of what it is.

Posted by Rachael Stern AKA TwistedBarbie on June 23 at 02:48pm

Well, I think we all recognize the difference between having an eating disorder and simply being too thin...but from her own statements, it does sound as though she did this on purpose and doesn't think she took it too far.

Whatever the reason, while I hate to be critical, I think she does look much too thin. Numbers are really irrelevant; it is clear from the after photo that there is very little flesh of any kind - muscle OR fat - on her bones, and that is not, to my mind, any healthier or more attractive than being significantly overweight.

Looking at her reminded me of how Tracey Gold used to look when she was sick. That's the first thing that came to my mind. Regardless if she has a disorder or not, it is evident she NEEDS to gain a little weight to be in the healthy range. That's saying a lot coming from someone who thinks skinny is beautiful.

Posted by beth on June 23 at 02:53pm

I think I like the curves she has in her "before" pic. Add about 5 more pounds to that picture and that's where I'm at now. I'm hoping to get down to how much I weighed years ago, which is about 5 more pounds than her "after" pic.

My flexibility and energy back then was much better than it is now. These day I feel much older than I am and it's time to shave myself thin (but not too thin). I give her props for sheddding some of that weight off and changing her eating habits for the better!

Posted by Mimi on June 23 at 03:06pm

p.s. 60lbs lost in 1 year isn't excessive. That's 5lbs per month, which is totally healthy.

Posted by Mimi on June 23 at 03:09pm

I dont like to gawk too much at weight loss/gain of celebs. I think if she gain 60lbs, people would begin to blab that shes too big...I dont like saying she has an eating disorder because if she does, so what, she needs help, and eating disorders are unfoutunate. We shouldn't talk about them like they are like criminal act. Whatever the reason, i just hope she's healthy and happy.

Posted by Hungry Waif on June 23 at 03:16pm

Wow...that's a pretty significant change. I think she looks gorgeous in that before picture!

I'll reserve judgment on everything else.

Posted by Dara Chadwick on June 23 at 03:44pm

well, since you mention digestive issues, I'd believe that's the issue instead of necessarily an eating disorder.

Posted by kb on June 23 at 05:13pm

She DOES look rather thin, but as long as she's eating healthy and IS healthy and happy, well, that's what matters.

Posted by Susan on June 23 at 06:29pm

The problem with any diet is to develop tha self-discipline to remain at your ideal weight and to react to your body's metabolic changes by adjusting your calorie intake. At 49, my metabolism has decreased so my diet to exercise ratio has increased to 90/10. Ms. Johnson will hopefully not fall into the binge/purge purgatory that happens to many beautiful women....4pack

Posted by 4pack on June 23 at 08:23pm

I'd love to say she looks better before. But, I love a ballerina body...even if they are usually unhealthy!

You and I would look really great walking down a street together because I'm REALLY short! ;)

Posted by Haley-O on June 23 at 09:07pm

Have you guys seen all the OTHER pics of her that are suddenly flooding the Internet? She is beyond skinny. And eating disordered people are notorious liars. I know that from personal experience;)

I would reserve judgment and just hope she gets treatment like Waif and Dara suggested except that she is (most likely) feeding us a load of crap. And that hurts women in our society as a whole. For some people being that skinny may be natural but looking back on her prolific career, I think it's safe to say it's not natural. I'm sick to death of celebrities spewing this kind of garbage. sigh... *rant over*

Posted by charlotte on June 23 at 10:57pm

I reckon any agent or press people would advise her against admitting anything other than the healthy diet she describes, whether it's true or not. After all, how many overly-skinny celebs (and there are so many!) have we ever heard actually admit that they currently have a problem? Any? OK, so some of them may be naturally skinny but I would bet my last celery stalk that at least some of them HAVE to be lying....

I used to watch 3rd rock all the time as a tween, she was easily my favorite character and I thought she was beautiful.
At first glance I thought it was awful that she lost the weight, and I thought that she no longer looks as attractive as she used to, but in that first photo she really does look unhappy, and visibly uncomfortable.
If she's happy now then she's still beautiful to me. :)

Posted by heatherbomb on June 24 at 08:37am

She does look rather thin, but she COULD still be healthy- its just a drastic difference from what she was. And she might simply be at the lower end of a healthy weight rather than be underweight. It's tough to say for something like this.

Posted by Sagan on June 24 at 09:39am

Looking at the after picture, my first thought is she looks like she was ill...and it does say she was in the hospital. I hope that's all it is, and I hope she is taking care of herself.

Posted by JavaChick on June 24 at 01:29pm

I'll bet she used Phentermine. Those actresses all use it to lose weight because it works. Try to find a doctor that will prescribe it...that's another story. It's very dangerous, but they take it because it works.

Posted by fan123 on June 25 at 11:18am

If she is happy with how she looks then good for her. I personally think she looks great and is eating good healthy food. It really isn't anyones business but her own.

Posted by Pablena on June 25 at 02:40pm

I am 22, 5ft 2 and weigh 112 and constantly get comments on how little I am and I do get sick of it. I do eat healthy most of the time but also eat junkfood 2-3 times a week. It is possible to lose heaps of weight and not be anorexic or taking diet pills. I don't exercise excessively and I have heart condition. ugh 'rant' over

Posted by hot mama on June 25 at 03:55pm

Hey, Why does everybody assume that when a person actually does lose weight that he/she has an eating disorder? She probably Does Not have an eating disorder. It is not fair to pen a label on her without knowing all the facts for sure. I say good luck to you Kristen, be healthy, and you jealous people need to lay off.

Posted by dana on June 25 at 04:44pm

I wish that someday people, will learn to see and hear themselfs in how they say things,....first, she was awfully fat and crappy looking and know she`s to skinny, please, like many people in the dim light they have to please their public, but there`s no way to please millions of people who watch their shows, so I hope they would listen to their closest friends before they became famous, they will tell them how far from reality have they drop, and they can be happy again just been who they truly are

Posted by carolina on July 02 at 08:56am

Sadly, Charlotte is right...eating disordered people are notorious liars. When I suffered with bulimia, I got VERY good at coming up with excuses. I think what happened was that she suffered with her ulcer and lost some weight and then, not being satisfied with that, decided to lose more. I really hope she doesn't take it too far because she looks like she's at the verge of being tooo skinny.
