I have a J. Love/hate relationship

Remember this whole blowout over Jennifer Love Hewitt's humanness butt? The poor woman was eviscerated by the media after some unflattering photos of her in a black bikini surfaced. She was celebrating her engagement and should have been happy and peaceful. Instead, TMZ screamed "We know what you ate this summer, Love – everything!"

If you'll recall, Love got on her MySpace page and wrote:

Current mood: annoyed

This is the last time I will address this subject.

I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image.

A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn't make you beautiful...

To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini – put it on and stay strong.

Xoxo

JLH

But this week, there's a pic of her looking teeny tiny on the cover of US Weekly with the headline "18 lbs. in 10 weeks!" Her trainer says with her, it's not, 'I want to look good in that dress. She wanted to start moving around because she thought it would make her feel better." Of course, she pays her trainer, a lot, so it's not like we're going to hear, "She screamed her way through gut-wrenching workouts and ate nothing but green peppers and cabbage to shed those pounds that humiliated her so badly."

Love is getting married soon so this could be a "gots-to-look-thin-in-my-wedding-dress" thing.

Anyway, I hate getting so wrapped up in celeb stuff, but I did want to ask:

Jennifer Love Hewitt is on the cover of US Weekly, celebrating her weight loss. Late last year, she was mocked for some unflattering booty shots, to which she repsonded, "A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn't make you beautiful." What do you think?

  • She's being hypocritical.
  • As long as she lost weight in a healthy way, good for her.
  • I don't give a rat's tail what celebs do and US Weekly is a crap source for news.
  • Leave J. Love alone!

PS ANTM starts so, so soon! And my girl Britney (don't hate) might be making a special appearance to redeem herself! Can you tell I read that puppy cover-to-cover?

18lbs in 10 weeks isn't an entirely unrealistic goal, and if she feels better about herself and did it healthily then of course fair play...but I don't understand why she felt the need to get herself plastered over the cover of a tabloid magazine applauding her efforts...that's where the hypocrisy lies methinks.

I call hypocrisy. Last year she defended her "curves" and this year she is sweating them off. I guess now she can wear that size 2, huh?

Posted by workout mommy on August 17 at 03:47pm

I'm with workout mommy. Seems to me that she let the media pressure get to her in spite of her efforts last year to say how much she appreciates her curves. I never understood the whole starving to fit into your wedding dress concept anyway. I bought my wedding dress to fit my body rather than trying to conform my body to fit the dress. But I guess I'm in the minority there.

Her original goal was to be a role model for girls who read idolize skinny celebs and the US cover undermines that. Yeah, 18 lbs in 10 weeks could have been a completely healthy transformation for her, but the cover is a pic of her new skinny bod, not her increased strength or endurance and that's the message that will be picked up on by the young girls.

FIRST I call BS that she was a 2 in her "before" stage...if she was a size two then my pants are lying to me. The only reason i say that is because she's talking out of both sides on her mouth, "I have curves and beautiful- dont make fun of me" "Im only a size two, im not fat." way to represent the average curvy woman thats a size 2? please.

and THEN lose weight on top of it. i hate hollywood.

hate it, yet hopelessly addicted.

Grounded, the cure for Hollywood addiction is to live there for a couple of years. You'll get over it, lol!

She was most likely pressured into it. She has a show, and there are folks who probably told her that if she didn't lose weight, the show would fail and hundreds of people would be out of work. All the actors, extras, crew, makeup artists, wardrobe folks, caterers, drivers, etc. would starve, and it would be ALL HER FAULT. 'Cause that's the kind of shit they pull in Hollywood.

It took me a year to drop 50 of the 52 lbs I gained during pregnancy and I am still at 170 (5'8") curvy and NOT FAT! I love my curves and I dont want to lose them for any thing. I think its way hypocritical of her to say she is not fat then turn around and flaunt that she lost 18lbs in 10 weeks.

Posted by mommy of 1 on August 17 at 09:09pm

I call hypocrisy. I call her out for calling herself this role model and then caving and plastering herself as this new skinny bitch on the mag covers. Nothing about the strength or health - all about the look. Bullshit this was not to do with getting into a dress size.

I'm vaguely disappointed. I know, I know, signs of a serious celeb-addiction. I AM glad that she's healthy and fit and all that, but I doubt she did it for HERSELF and not for the studios and celeb-machine.

Posted by Gemfit on August 17 at 09:25pm

Well, I think she looks awesome with her big cans and all. She got one of them faces that it is good for her to have a 'booming' body. It is hypocritical to make a big deal about the weight loss after crying about the idiots who talked trash about her wonderful big a$$ and love pillows.

Posted by Hugh E. Rection on August 17 at 10:17pm

I think she just caved to the pressure.. definitely don't think she was a size 2 before though. Not that that matters, but why lie about it?

Did you see on ANTM this season there is a transgendered model? Wonder how that will play out. You think Tyra needs some media attention to her show that hasn't done so well in the past few cycles? Also- what really is the difference between transgendered and drag queen??? Seriously, don't get it....

Posted by Tiki cup on August 17 at 11:05pm

It's the lying that bothers me. If she was just losing weight to get healthy then why didn't she say that before? Instead of lauding her "normal" figure, she would have said she felt unhealthy. More likely I think she made her fortune off her looks and now doesn't know any other way to live. I'm all for people getting healthy. But I'm every more for honesty.

Posted by charlotte on August 17 at 11:15pm

IF she did it healthfully AND for herself then I'm with MizFit.

BUT I don't think she did. I think she's being a hypocrite. (And like many others, I don't believe she was a 2 before, not that that matters, but really, if you want to be a role model, why lie?)

Tiki Cup--the difference between a transgendered individual and a drag queen is this: a drag queen is a man who enjoys wearing women's clothing. It has nothing to do with how they identify themselves as a man or woman, they simply enjoy the clothing. Transgendered individuals genuinely believe they were born into the wrong bodies, they feel they were meant to be the opposite gender of what they were born. In either case, it may have nothing to do with sexual orientation--there are many straight drag queens and many transgenders who wouldn't identify themselves as gay.

I have to agree with the hypocrisy comments. On the other hand, it's hard to be a woman in this culture and NOT be hypocritical about the issue.

You can theoretically feel that the pressure to be thin is totally f*cked up and stupid, yet find yourself caving to it in all kinds of ways.

It would be nice if celebrities were a little more evolved, but alas, they tend to be even more screwed up than the rest of us.

Posted by Crabby McSlacker on August 18 at 07:24am

I agree with parts of what everyone has said - hypocrisy but who cares and good for her all wrapped into one. I saw the story, too and like you felt I needed to write at least a little something about it. This is what I wrote:

First, I feel like good for her for getting healthier by exercising and eating better. At least she didn't do some crazy diet and at least she admitted that she actually exercised. Second, I feel like why? She looked fine before and made a huge deal about being called "fat" by the press several months ago. I thought she was a good example for women that skinny is not the key to happy and healthy. Third, I feel like why do I care? It's her body and who am I to comment on it. I must admit that her US Weekly interview on her weight loss sort of takes away from my concerns about judging her for her body though.

Posted by HangryPants on August 18 at 10:01am

I can see both sides of it. On the one hand, it's hypocritical. She was trying to set a good body image example just last year, and this year she's flapping on about her weight loss. On the other hand, I agree with Crabby that it's hard to be a woman in this culture and not feel the pressure to lose lose lose. I once read that Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives, TransAmerica) has trouble getting fitted on the set because she's a size 6 - and she's got a wonderful figure.

As long as JLH is healthy, then by all means exercise and try to lose those pounds. Just don't make a big thing of it in the magazines, because it totally undercuts her whole positive body image message of last year.

Ha! I don't give a rats a%% what the media says....their portrayal of beauty is bunk! :)

Posted by Mark Salinas on August 18 at 11:49am

Mark, I love you, lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Alyssa on August 18 at 01:30pm

Ya know, it's the same thing with Tyra. They get ridiculed, preach "body confidence and acceptance" and then go on a cover exclaiming how they lost all of the fat.

There might be nothing "wrong" with it, but I think it's crap and it's only teaching little girls the wrong thing.

Total crap. They derail their entire "healthy body" message.

Posted by ashley on August 18 at 02:13pm

hypocrite. it's funny; i saw that magazine cover on saturday and i was gonna post a link to it if you didn't mention it. she was so cute before; it's a shame that she felt that she had to lose weight to please the media (who we know will never be satisfied). what's next, botox?

Posted by peaches on August 18 at 02:30pm

"...ate nothing but green peppers and cabbage..."

Uh, I'm sorry, but in which universe is this considered "healthful?"

Posted by Despina on August 18 at 02:45pm

it just took me FOREVER to figure out what the heck ANTM stood for! does that make me uncool?
