What I get for watching daytime TV

I am sitting here with a half-watermelon in my lap, spoon in hand, preparing for a day of writing and cooking and The View is on. The topic of discussion is Couples Who Have Plastic Surgery Together. And there is a 15-year-old girl who is talking about getting a breast reduction last year because her chest was so big, teachers were complaining that she was disrupting the classroom.

So she got a reduction and while under the knife, she got lipo, too. Mom-sanctioned liposuction around her stomach. This, the mother says, was a pre-emptive strike against a future eating disorder because all the women in the family have the same stubborn belly pooch and they all hate it so rather than risk her 15-year-old grow up hating her body, why not have it sucked out...thus avoiding an eating disorder?

Huh? Does this make sense to any of you, on any level?

I've often heard of people going under the knife and getting some extra tweaks here and there. I think it's appalling in general that a mother is allowing her 15 year old to go under the knife (similarly as appalling as the females at my high school getting breast implants as a grad present from mom and pops). I do, however, realize that a breast reduction surgery is a bit of a different story, however if the female and family deemed that surgery an appropriate option, it's upsetting to me that a 15 year old is already learning to deal with her issues with such extreme measures.

I have found that I love these shows now that Im a mama.
in the same vein I didnt find the movie Thirteen all that disturbing.

while it is WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL it's the 'apple? hello! you fell not far from the tree' of it all which gives me *hope* with my daughter.

that if I can lead by example (you know, and not have her unsightly 2 year old leg chub removed via liposuction) then there is a glimmer of hope she wont end up disordered.

Um, any breasts are disruptive to a high school classroom, the room is filled with hormonal teenage boys!

Um. . . yeah, I don't see the logic here at all. Way to prevent an eating disorder by basically telling your daughter that she's not good enough as she is, Mom!

Ah, hello, duh, and then bring her out to get her good and drunk thus avoiding any alcoholism issues in her future.

Having a mother who emphasizes unhealthy values in relation to one's natural physique, perhaps, might.

I understand wanting a breast reduction, IF THE GIRL WANTS IT, NOT because it's 'disrupting class (WTF?!?!?!). But maybe waiting until she has stopped growing? Until she's out of high school and able to make that decision without all the adolescent weirdness?
As far as the lipo, no way. Bad call. Wrong in every way possible.

I heard about this the other day. It still doesn't make sense to me. I even have issues with the girl getting the breast reduction. She's still 15 so her body is still developing. If once it's done changing/growing and breast size is still a big issue for her, then sure that's understandable.

BTW Leslie I was reading my latest issue of Aussie Women's Health mag the other day and YOU were quoted in it!

I'd heard the story earlier but got it wrong--I didn't realize that the lipo was happening while she was already under the knife. I was totally appalled to think Mom would have kid undergo a lipo to prevent an eating disorder, but only mildly appalled to find out she was just adding it in along with the other surgery.

Don't know why the distinction seems important, but I actually feel relieved that it wasn't as bad as I thought!

I watched this episode!! It was interesting and it just seemed ridiculous to me that girls this young would be that uncomfortable with their body to already get plastic surgery..and then after that a nose job. Please.

Nah, actually, I blogged this for HuffPo. The short answer is, I think the girl's plastic surgery doc is the Star Idiot of the piece.

Wow. Hey, can Mom have lipo too while they're at it - you know, to get all that unsightly fat OUT OF HER HEAD?

And honestly, the first teacher that comments to me about my daughter's breasts disrupting class is SO GETTING FIRED. That's all. Just, you know, fired.
