Last month I sat back and played Judge Judy McJudgerson, calling out the cast members of the new 90210 for being too thin.

Apparently, I wasn't the only one. Check out the new cover of US Weekly:

cover-b_9.jpg

(Might I add, tongue-in-cheek kudos to US for being able to seamlessly transition from a slightly relevant Sarah Palin-themed issue to this possibly doctored cover shot of a would-be anorexic.)

According to the story, 90210 actresses Jessica Stroup (estimated to be 5'8" and 100-105 pounds) and Shenae Grimes (5'3" and 90 pounds) are thisclose to an intervention. Said intervention, according to reports, would be carried out by their male cast members, which I feel (sorry to say) would be about as effective and sensical as having a group of cigarette company execs attempt to persuade a three pack-a-day smoker to just give up her cute lil' habit.

"They want the girls to gain weight," a 90210 source reports in US. "They are trying too hard to be skinny, and it's started to wear on them. It's just not healthy." Added another source, "I've never seen Jessica or Shenae eat."

I found a pic of Stroup in April. She looks much thinner than in the cast photo, likely taken a while back, no? Of course, the group pic could have benefitted from a little reverse airbrushing.

Another pic showing just how incredibly thin these celebutantes are:

Can these girls really be blamed, though? Aren't they just doing what they're "supposed" to in LA LA land? Is this just Ally McBeal all over again? Should parents of young girls ban this show from being watched in their homes?

Things to consider:

1) 90210, shown on The CW, beats every other network on Tuesday nights in females 12-34.

2) According to The National Eating Disorders Association, in the 1990s, 42% of girls in grades 1-3 reported a desire to be thinner and the situation, says NEDA's CEO Lynn S. Grefe, has only "gotten worse."

3) People has called the stars of Gossip Girl "curvy."

"Curvy."

(Thanks to Entertainment Weekly for the factoids above, originally cited in this article.)

I feel devastated that something as serious as somebody suffering from an eating disorder is being turned over as daily entertainment for us to read about (and I compulsively read those articles just like everyone else).

I think the prevelance of anorexic tendencies amongst celebrities, and the ensuing media furore, is beginning to trivialise the issue.

Nobody is actually trying to UNDERSTAND the illness. It's just good copy.

And THAT'S scary.

Curvy! Grades 1-3!

I don't like it when magazines bash girls for being too thin. Sometimes they act so disgusted as though these girls are off on a killing rampage or something. It's not that they're criminals, for goodness sake- they need some help and support so that they can be healthy, they don't need more ridicule!

And TA, love your comment that no one is trying to understand. It's the same across the board as far as health care goes- we're all about "cures". What about preventing these things from beginning in the first place? What about not pressuring people into having these disorders?

I don't think you've written about this in a way that conveys concern...just gossipy. *SIGH*

Shouldn't you know better Leslie?

First - TA makes an excellent point. I posted on this for HuffPo and just reading the US article made me feel sick. I couldn't figure out why but she nailed it.

Second - You are so right to call attention to this Leslie! It's a shocking difference in an already too-skinny sphere. At least on Ally McBeal, all the women concerned were adults. Obesity is the last allowed discrimination (like you've said many times on here) and this is the backlash. Neither extreme is good.

All this sure helps their press though, no?

"Curvy?" How about saying they look "healthy?" Oh, jeez...magazines make me so mad.

Posted by Zandria on September 19 at 10:40am

Another scary thing (as if all this isn't frightening enough!) is that a lot of girls are posting on the magazine's website that they don't see anything wrong with how these actresses look.
And you're right, Leslie! Let's stop blaming these actresses, who are under immense pressure to look this way from agents, producers, and directors. Let's call THOSE ADULTS to task for causing this disordered behavior in the first place!
Of course, they'll just turn around and say they're only giving people what they want. Hollywood is famous, no pun intended, for passing the buck. The only way to affect change there is to hit them in the pocketbook. Which, by the ratings, doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon.
We're killing our girls.

It seems really simple, but there's a fairly easy way that we can all do our part to help end this fascination with being overly thin...WE CAN NOT READ US WEEKLY or any of those other crap magazines! Consumers of them are contributors to the problem. Why are girls pressured to be thin in Hollywood? Sure it's because their agents, producers and directors pressure them...but why? Because your average American consumer can't buy magazines like these off the shelves fast enough. It's good business! Even if you read them and are outraged by them, you're still helping them to sell more magazines...

Kids in grades 1-3? Omg. I remember reading an article in a magazine a while back about a woman who's daughter (3rd or 4th grade I think) was very active and sporty. She went over to a friend's house, and the friend's mother thought it would be fun to weigh all the girls and compare their weights. Uh.....

And if those girls are curvy, I'm morbidly obese. I have a good curvy figure, size 10, and seriously, those girls are not curvy. They're thin. The other ones just looks like they subsist on celery and veggies alone.

I'm the mom of a 12-year-old girl. I'm also a full-time freelance writer for magazines. It is a very, very fine line to walk sometimes.

I talk to my daughter a lot about re-touching and digital enhancement. I also talk to her a lot about being in the public eye and what these young women give up to be celebrities (their sanity? their health?).

Trish makes an excellent point, yet still I don't think these types of magazines or other media will be focusing on other things besides women's bodies anytime soon.

We have to keep talking to our girls about this stuff. We just have to.

I think perhaps US weekly needs something more interesting to talk about. And gossip girl stars are freakin hot, but curvy is a bit much, they are healthy, period.

p.s. I really love the contraversial issues you bring up on this site, it's one of my new favs! I may not always agree with everything, but I appreciate anything that makes me reevaluate my thoughts on issues, just like this!

Posted by ModelBehavior on September 19 at 02:21pm

CURVY? Hot - YES. Curvy? Emmm.....NO!

I actually thought that about the 90210 girls when I saw the premiere. One of the girls clearly looks malnourished, while the lead actress has hair that accounts for 20% of her body volume (and probabaly weight).

It's sad, really, that girls so young are being brought up to watch THOSE girls on TV. They are going to think that those girls look normal....and they just don't. They look almost sickly.

Posted by Holly on September 19 at 05:15pm

The really sad thing is, is that these girls are (most likely) only going to be too delighted to be causing such media hype because they're so skinny.

Splashing their ribs and clavicles across the front pages isn't helping them, it's glorifying them.

Also, Gossip Girls, curvy? Heavens, what hope is there!?

Posted by Cara on September 20 at 08:05am

"while the lead actress has hair that accounts for 20% of her body volume (and probabaly weight)"
I noticed that also....

The fact that they're calling the GG actresses "curvy" is ridiculous--"healthy" would be a much more appropriate term! At least they don't look like they weigh 100 lbs...

Posted by Rachel on September 21 at 01:19pm

I LOVE Blake Lively. My boyfriend has a huge thing for her and says she has the greatest body. He says we have the same legs :)

I think the media is trying to take back the term "curvy" and spin it into a positive thing, but we all are so used to equating "curvy" with "plus sized." Not true. Itll take a while to make the transition.

I never noticed how skinny the Silver character was. Annie, the main girl, never struck me as too thin, remember some people are smaller than others by nature- i think hurling eating disorder labels without knowing someone can be just as dangerous and ignoring it all together.
